Hulu recently announced their new monthly subscription model, Hulu Plus, that includes current TV show episodes from the major networks, HD formats and iPhone and iPad compatibility. With the many other online video content options available, is another monthly bill worth it? The MacJury examines the evidence, including comparisons to Roku,, TiVo, iTunes Store offerings and more. Where does Netflix fit into the picture? Can we finally unplug from cable? Is it just the best iMac yet, or a harbinger of a coming move to a true television-style device from Apple? Evidence is also heard on Apple’s purchase of LaLa and what it might mean for the future of Apple’s music business, how the North Carolina data center may figure in, and how it might just fit in to the much ballyhooed Apple Tablet. The anticipation for Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference 2008 is so intense that we had to convene a second panel to discuss it. A wish-list kicks off the session, with the jury agreeing on one product they would like to see while disagreeing on others. (Would *you* want a pink MacBook Pro?) The analysis then slides to what we can realistically expect and why, including thoughts on the iPhone and Mac OS. The MacJury takes the case of on-demand content delivery options, discussing the announcements of a NetFlix set-top box, the return of the TiVo lifetime service agreement, Amazon Unbox, the Apple TV, the iTunes Store and Adobe TV. Selection, price, speed, format and “happy cash” are all placed into evidence as the MacJury finds the studios guilty of manipulating content distribution, but the jury is still out on which options will find favor with consumers of all sophistication levels.

MacJury #801: The MacJury Is Called To Order on Blu-Ray, the Apple TV, Tech Conferences and More

MacVoices‘ host Chuck Joiner is launching a new show: The MacJury, and the first show is being included on the MacVoices’ site and in the newsfeeds to help introduce listeners to the latest program for Mac news and entertainment. Each show will feature a different panel of personalities from the Mac universe in a freewheeling discussion that will interest Mac users of all levels.

The very first MacJury empaneled consists of some of the members of MacLevelTen, discussing the rise (or not) of Blu-Ray and how it affects Mac users. Will it solve all your storage problems, prove to be just a stop-gap technology, or be leapfrogged by faster bandwidth as a video delivery medium? The jury members then take on the Apple TV, what it brings to the table beyond movie rentals, and what needs to be added to make it a true killer product. Why there is a trend toward in-person tech conferences, why podcasts and social media may be helping drive that trend, and the dynamics of Twitter are all entered into evidence in the first show.
