It is that time of year again. Schools and universities around the globe welcome students back to their studies, but what tech is going with them? How are those institutions embracing (or not) laptops, iPhones, iPods and iPads? Are they keeping up with the pace of change in the outside world, or is education establishment stuck in the past? The MacJury examines these questions from a variety of standpoints, including hardware access and availability, textbooks vs. tech, the wisdom of funding allocations, the U.S. education market compared to other places in the world, and more. Recommendations for hardware, software and services for students and educators alike are provided by the diverse panel of Erik Bernskiold, Pat Fauquet, Jeff Gamet, Keith Lang, Julio Ojeda-Zapata, and host Chuck Joiner.
<itunes:summary>It is that time of year again.

The MacJury convenes to examine some of the current issues in the Mac world, including the iPhone 4 pre-order meltdown, how a reservation is not a pre-order, and your best bets to get a new iPhone on the first day. Discussions range from the popularity of the iPhone, AT&T and Apple’s culpability for problems, and why the iPhone generates so much buzz and Android phones don’t? Then, the new Mac mini is put on the stand for a discussion of key features, how it fits into the home theater market, and what it means for the future of the Apple TV. Safari 5’s new Reader feature also gets the third degree, eliciting strong feelings from the user, the content creator, and web publisher perspectives. The evidence on all these issues is weighed and discussed by the panel of Jeff Carlson, Bryan Chaffin, Julio Ojeda-Zapata, Michael T. Rose, Fraser Speirs, and host Chuck Joiner.
<itunes:summary>The MacJury convenes to examine some of the current issues in the Mac world, including the iPhone 4 pre-order meltdown, how a reservation is not a pre-order, and your best bets to get a new iPhone on the first day. Discussions range from the popularity of the iPhone, AT#38;T and Apple's culpability for problems, and why the iPhone generates so much buzz and Android phones don't? Then, the new Mac mini is put on the stand for a discussion of key features, how it fits into the home theater market, and what it means for the future of the Apple TV. Safari 5's new Reader feature also gets the third degree, eliciting strong feelings from the user, the content creator, and web publisher perspectives. The evidence on all these issues is weighed and discussed by the panel of Jeff Carlson, Bryan Chaffin, Julio Ojeda-Zapata, Michael T. Rose, Fraser Speirs, and host Chuck Joiner.

<itunes:summary>In the second part of the deliberations on the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference announcements, the iPhone's specifications, including the glass-and-steel construction, the new screen construction, and the camara are reviewed. AT#38;T's upgrade policies for existing iPhone owners are examined (and they don't appear to be consistent), AT#38;T coverage, and Steve Jobs' presentation of iAds are all analyzed by the panel of John F.

In the second of a two-part discussion, The MacJury takes on the Flash controversy from the ground up, starting with an understandable explanation of what Flash is and the many ways it has been deployed. Flash faces some challenges since Apple decided not to support it on their mobile devices, and the panel looks at the difficulty of converting various projects (web sites, games, programs, video) from Flash to other delivery platforms, how that affects authors, developers and consumers, and whether this is just part of the evolution of computing. Along the way, the motives of all parties in this drama, why part of the problem is the mis-use and over-use of Flash as an tool, and the real-world implications of a Flash-less world are examined by the distinguished of John F. Braun, Jeff Gamet, Dave Hamilton, John C. Welch, Terry White, Omaha Sternberg, and host Chuck Joiner.

<itunes:summary>In the second of a two-part discussion, The MacJury takes on the Flash controversy from the ground up, starting with an understandable explanation of what Flash is and the many ways it has been deployed.

With much less fanfare than accompanied the first model, the iPad 3G made its debut last weekend. Is it better than its less-connected sibling? The MacJury is on the case, with two members chiming in from the high seas, examining the latest device from both expectation and performance standpoints. The panel discusses the results of a real-world New York City travel test, and why 3G adds flexibility in some cases but may not be necessary in others. Which data plan to select, how much video 250 megabytes gets you, the effects of 3G on battery life, and a round of favorite iPad apps are all covered by Jeff Carlson, Pat Fauquet, Mark Fuccio, Jean MacDonald, Tom Negrino and host Chuck Joiner.

<itunes:summary>With much less fanfare than accompanied the first model, the iPad 3G made its debut last weekend.

This isn’t just discussion of iPad first impressions. The topics included iPad sharing, etiquette, the need for a guest mode, the iPad as a physical object, and the many places you will want to use your iPad. Where the iPad fits in your digital life, whether it is a new, replacement or convergence device, the most fashionable ways to tote your iPad, and more were entered into evidence. The session concluded with each MacJuror revealing their favorite aspect of the iPad (guess who compared it to, “eating pudding with your fingers”), talking about why what you do with it when you aren’t using the iPad is important, and the unusual way the TidBITS crew obtained their iPads. The panel for this session included: Mark Anbinder, Jeff Carlson, Adam Engst, Tonya Engst, Glenn Fleishman, Joe Kissell, Rich Mogull and Matt Neuburg.
